The History of Franchising

It was believed until recently that the history of commercial franchising in the United States began when "Albert Singer" in the United States. As it turns out, John “Albert” Singer was only seven or eight years old when his father, Isaac Merritt Singer, founded the I.M. Singer & Company in 1851 – and at no time in its long history did the Singer Manufacturing Company ever franchised.

The title of the first franchisor in the United States actually pre-dates USA’s independence and is held by… Benjamin Franklin.
